A Conversation for Talking Point: Fantasy 'Band Aid' Line-Ups!

How about a line up of those poor souls whose only contribution to music is to offer up a one hit wonder? As well as benefiting Africa, the artists would now have more than one hit to their name. Best line up that I can think of is...

Bono and Bananarama (to hold it all together)
Stiltskin
Hearsay
Falco
Chesney Hawkes
Los Del Rio
Arthur Brown
Dunfermline Athletic Football Club
Jilted John
Black Lace

If there are any more-than-one-hit wonders up there, I'm sorry, but I can't remember what they did for a follow up.

Black Lace had quite the career going at one point so I wouldn't call them one-hit wonders. Falco was quite popular in Europe, but only had a couple of hits over here smiley - smiley

And of course the fabulous Hear'Say had quite a spectacular (if brief) chart career:

Pure and Simple - No.1
The Way To Your Love - No.1
Everybody - No.4
Lovin' Is Easy - No.5

And their album 'Popstars' went to No.7.

Of course, following the disastrous No.5 single release, the band realised that they hated each other nearly as much as the public hated them, and they called it quits.

The fickle world of pop, eh? smiley - smiley

Looks like you could do with a look at our fabbo guide to One-Hit Wonders - A766000 - which looks at songs that aren't in any way one-hit wonders, sngs that are one-hit wonders in other countries and of course yer actual one hit wonders. smiley - biggrin

This might actually be better as a 'massively overrated artists Band Aid' list.

What a brilliant idea!

Actually I was going to come up with a list but then realised they all qualify for Over-Earnest or Unjustifiably Pretentious Band Aid: Assorted members of the Cranberries
Manic Street Preachers
Simple Minds
Stereophonics
('We suffer for our art...it's time you did too').

Oh! Oh! Can I stick Oasis and U2 on that list as well, please?

Careful. I once called Elton John a one-hit wonder on an open Web Forum, boy did I get flamed. Not gonna do that again. Nope.

Were you just being a purist - counting Number Ones only? You were probably flamed for willful inaccuracy more than anything else smiley - smiley

(And he's had at least three number ones now....)

I'm not sure I'd call Jilted Johna one hit wonder, either. If I can name more than four of a band's songs, then they're not a one-hit-wonder. That's my oh so scientific method, anyway.

"If I can name more than four of a band's songs, then they're not a one-hit-wonder."

smiley - erm The more conventional method of telling whether or not an act is a one hit wonder is whether or not they had more than one hit...

Yup, "wilful inaccuracy" is pretty close. I was using the definition of "how many songs *I* like". It turns out that is not a generally accepted definition, as a number of folks pointed out ... rather pointedly, I might add.

Why can't the bands that i remember as being instanty forgetable not just stay forgotten? So it looks like I'm deserving not many points out of ten for correctly identifying one hit wonders.smiley - smiley

Dunfermline Athletic Football Club deserves an inclusion as an example of a football team that released a record. Who can forget "We're the boys from East End Park" sung to the Eastenders theme tune?
