I was a Deck Officer on a Merchant ship in Iskenderun, Turkey, back in the 80's.
It was during Ramadan, and I was on "cargo watch"
Just after midnight, a very kindly docker came aboard with a foil-wrapped parcel, which he invited me to share.
He opened it to reveal the whole-roasted head of a sheep...well, "singed" would be a more accurate culinary description.
On borrowing my deck-knife, he gouged out the entire ear, wax and all, and offered it to me with a look of great generosity.
How could I refuse? I pretended to enjoy every morsel.
It's only in retrospect that I realise There was nothing wrong with the food; only my own gastronomic prejudices had made me feel revusion. It probably tasted not bad.
Mind you, coming from a land where Haggis is eaten on a regular basis, I had very little to complain about.
