When discussing magnetic media, you can't escape the many tried and failed formats for both audio and video.
Beta was a higher quality VCR format but lost to VHS. Why? JVC made a marketing decision early on that longer play times were more important that the picture quality. They were right. Beta came out with longer play modes later but the damage was done and their market share slipped to zero by the late 1980's.
Does anyone still have 8-track cartridges in their basement? Another format that came and went.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
