Yes, Wonder Woman. In the comics, she comes from the race of Amazons, feared female warriors from Greek myth. The Amazons were created by a group of female deities (including Hera, Athena and Aphrodite) from the souls of women who died before their time, and Diana was the soul of an unborn child, the only daughter of the Amazon queen Hippolyta. The Amazons are pretty much immortal, and are the only surviving worshippers of the Greek pantheon, based on an island which was, until recently, hidden from 'man's world'. Diana, as Wonder Woman, is their ambassador to the rest of the world, intended to champion the cause of peace, yet a skilled warrior herself.

The Greek deities frequently appear in the comics, sometimes in a deus ex machina role, but more recently with an intriguing twist. The power structure on Mount Olympus has undergone a reversal, and although Zeus doesn't realise it yet, he is no longer the most powerful of the gods. People remember him, of course, but no longer really believe in him. What they do believe in are war, love and knowledge. Hence Ares, Aphrodite and Athena have the real power. And Ares in particular can not help but meddle...
