Thats the one. Famed by all of London for the gents loos...
It has an upstairs bar that they do hire out, but it will be a squeeze for more than 40-50, as I recall. Try contacting them and asking.

Well, this is my contiuing question - just how many people (based on previous experience) can be expected to attend a winter meet?

I think I could do all three and would try to attend-train to euston ain't difficult. It's just what the union puts on 1st saturday back, and maybe sport so that I might have to go back late afternoon. I would come though.

At the last London Winter Meetup, 10Jan2004, 67 people signed up for it and another 18 put themselves down as possibles. I don't remember exactly how many turned up, but it was probably around the 80 mark.

I don't think we had as many as 80 people at the last winter meet... I heard that not many people went to the summer meet and that it was agreed we'd never grace the Penderal Oak with our cash again...?

I don't think the oak would have us back even if we wanted to not sure how many there was relaly, did seem fewer than normal

Mmm...
I think 40 to 50 people would be a reasonable ball park figure... anyone strongly disagree with this estimate?

Zak T Duck Posted Oct 22, 2004
I wouldn't disagree. From what I gather half the problem at the last one is that a fair few had to pull out or just couldn't make it for various reasons.

Sounds about right; people always ahv eto pull out at the last minute, lets face it, a H2G2 meet, as important as it is, will take a back seat for most people when something crops up in RL. Although there are normally a few who can* make it and find this out at the last minute, those that drop out tend to excede this group in numbers

So we are looking for wateringhole for the evening of Saturday the 8th of Jan. that can take about 40 or 50 people... preferaby a short walk from a tube.

The fiance suggested the old Cheddar Cheese (love it for the name) or a pub that has now become a Walkabout pub both near chancery lane. I'll have a google to see if I can find some links...

My vote goes for the 29th January. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would need to have had another payday after Christmas before I could afford to go out anywhere. With regard to how many people would go, I'm sure holding it later in the month would increase the numbers attending too.

The Walkabout is going to be rammed on a Saturday. I doubt they'd be interested in having 60-80 people in a group. I'd guess the same applies to the Cheddar Cheese, which is hardly an unknown pub.
There is one possibility south of the river but just at the moment I can't remember it's name...It's certainly convenient for the Tube (Bang opposite London Bridge Tube) and on the main Borough High Street.
I'm sure i shall be returning there before long so I'll come back with a report and full details when I do. In any event, watch the meet space for a foodies delight of an alternative Saturday Afternoon activity.

I did see that.
Speaking personally, and I'm sure i'm not the only one, I'd rather poke my eyes out with spoons than set foot in the Tate Modern again...

is the pub I was thinking of. There are downsides. The cellar has no bar or loos in it so it does mean going upstairs to get to the beer and the facilities.
Also, I have no idea how busy it gets on a saturday evening, so it may be they wouldn't want to hire out the cellar. But one can only try, eh?
