How does it work?

How does the "who's online" thingy work? Since I'm always logged in it can't use that.
Does it notice everytime I load a new page and consider me online until some set time later?
Or is there some more "sinister" hidden surveilance going on?

It uses the cookie that is put on your computer when you logged in. It shows who has looked at the site in the last 15 minutes.
