Although I don't want to delete my whole account, is there a way for me to delete past conversations from my space, so that they cannot be seen?

Yes and no.
You can certainly 'unsubscribe' from conversations you have participated in, in the past so they will not appear in your conversation list. However the conversations don't actually disappear - they are still onsite and visible to everybody else in the conversation.
Postings that have been made to your personal space will always be visible.
Is it just a general enquiry or was there a particular posting that you are offended by?
