In the UK one thing that seemed to mark the 1990's was football becoming the staple of a much more 'poncified' fan base. John Thomson's character in The Fast Show was based on this type - he brought a picnic hamper to games, didn't know the rules and changed his team allegiance at the drop of a hat.
Certain celebrities played a big role in this, of course. As did probably Baddiel & Skinner's Fantasy Football League show.
