Short but to-the-point, I think.

I'm unhappy with how the formatting turned out on the examples, using the tag. If anyone has thoughts on that, they would be appreciated.

Formal language should be displayed using the pre formatted style, you do not have much choise. There are many ways to change the appearance but not any is approved GuideML. . . "

I was gonna suggest you include the GuideML version until I saw it at the end smiley - smiley Good one. Never knew about this, but then again, I'm not smart enough to be a smiley - geek

TiT, is accepted GuideML? I wasn't sure, but I know is. I'll check on that and if it is I'll change it.

I did look at the approved GML page and see that is acceptable in the EG (in addition to the fact that there are a few precedents in programming entries, like the UNIX command line one), so I've gone ahead and changed it. I think that looks much better.

Am I the only person who cant get to the links - I am denied access to : http://cm.bell-labs.com/cm/cs/who/dmr/btut.html and to http://inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/~cs61c/resources/knr/ although that doesn't seem particularly surprising looking at them smiley - erm

I get 'canot find server' for the first, and error 403 for the second of those links, so you're not alone.

No mention of FORTRAN? smiley - winkeye (it's okay really, if you start including more then people will come in with their favourites - there are enough there already...)

Nice entry - just those two links that don't work as far as I can see.

Sorry about those broken links - they were definitely working when I wrote the entry. I just removed them.

I could include any number of examples of 'Hello world!'s, but then the entry would just be a list and not informative for its own sake. I tried to stick to examples from languages that are historically very important (like BASIC) or are still in active use today.smiley - smiley

Yep, be careful there. I was going to pop in with an ASP.NET sample. Hey, if you've got php, why not ASP?

Otherwise, a nice entry. Short and informative - though I hadn't heard any geeky jokes about it. Are there any samples, or is it something that just comes up?

I tried to think of times I've heard "Hello world" joked about, but I couldn't think of any specific examples (though there's probably something at http://xkcd.com ). I suppose it's just a standard subject of reference - there was this one time in math class last year when we all decided to do "Hello world" on our calculators.

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.

If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.

Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!
