l wish l'd discovered this site earlier, really. l first got into online interaction as opposed to the realtime sort back when l was just muddling through prepubescence, and shunned by all socially, but l never really discovered BBS or lRQ or USENET anything of that nature, and l got disillusioned with the entire culture of AOL chatting pretty quickly, and gave up on the internet for a long time. But after discovering this place, l never want to leave...it's good timing, too, as most of my RL friends are off to college, this year, and l shan't be seeing them. And most of them aren't as literate, at least not in the typing, lMming sense, as the average person you encounter on here, and l imagine l'll lose them to real time college life, anyway. lt's easy to interact with a broad spectrum of truly interesting people, here, though.

It's the DNA association. People register here, usually because they've read the books or heard the radio tapes. So that sense of humour and the literacy quotient appear here out of all proportion to anything else on the net. Mind you, there are gaggles of researchers, early teeners usually, who have come here because one of their friends did and I take it h2g2.com has some kind of name recognition in England that it doesn't here.

I haven't been this involved in an abstract community since the early Compuserve days, when Compuserve was the only general online community around. DOS days again.

You are evidently suffering from severe nonconformism. Are you still in high school?

Graduated this June. l'm sort of at cross purposes, now, frankly. All that nonconformism has just about blown my chances at getting into college or university, at least right away. Gradewise, l haven't had a very good time of it since sixth grade or so...nasty habit of ignoring or changing round assignments that don't suit me. lt doesn't get one far, not in the hyper-achiever high-school environment l had. The sort of place where everyone is accepted into the lvy Leagues on their academic merits strictly, and gets the atheletic scholarship to do so. Very much a high-pressure, preppy suburban ethic sort of place. lt was even a public school. l got semi-kicked-out of private school, to be placed in a "more diverse" environment..heh heh.
l'm still rather perversely proud of the fact that l got an 800 on my verbal SATs while simultaneously managing to fail honors English...

I had a pair of 590's for my SAT's but way high scores in English and German. And I was an indifferent achiever in high school, where I was mainly an outcast, and did 3 years of state college before escaping from the country. My parents never had the slightest interest in making an academic achiever out of me; I was to be "brought out" and married off to a 35 year old businessman. That was mother's dream destiny for me.

But when I got the three-week travel grant to go to Scotland, I cancelled the return ticket and stayed away for 15 years, by which time the balance of power had gone over to my side.

We'll talk more later. Right now I must sleep. Have a wander through the gallery, then find yourself a guest room you like. You can give it a name and decor if you like -- the only one fixed so far is the Barsoom Room. Sporky hates that for the very reason I like it; it's silly. I keep silly people there like the unconscious guy.
