Oh dear. I think I shall have to creep silently from the room - if the beanbag will let me - because I feel awfully uninformed. It has gradually dawned upon me that, comforting as it is to garner all ones news from the only English channel on offer, it does rather render one, well, stupid. I have absolutely no idea of what happens out in the great wide world beyond my boundaries any more. All I know is that the happy, smiling Tibetan people are grateful for Chinese intervention bringing them a modern lifestyle, and that South Africa is a safe and super holiday spot where violence is unknown and that lots of new schools have opened up so one can get a head start by teaching ones offspring calculus in utero. There is no violence or war or Hollywood shenannigans and as for Russia...well, where's that? I haven't heard the word even mentioned in public for yonks. (Sighs despondantly)And all this time I really thought that George Orwell simply had a good imagination.

Here's a fun diversion. Someone's taking votes on what should be the new seven wonders of the world:

Strangely enough, the Salon is nowhere to be found on the official ballot.

Simsonromany,
South Africa is a safe holiday spot?
Strewth, your TV channel isn't very honest is it! I hear it is far more dangerous these days.
BBC News24 is quite good for world wide news in a fairly impartial way.

Just been to pick up my watercolour painting as the art circle exibition has finished. What was nice was the artist volunteered to wrap painting for me. Susan Smith said she painted it recently using local leaves and it took a couple of afternoons at the art circle, she said she really enjoyed painting that particular painting too, she thought the frame really suited it.
I think it is nice to meet the artists to have some idea of who painted it, I said I like the idea of a local artist painting it just for pleasure, not money.
When you think that it only cost £30 and that was 2 afternoons work and included cost of frame, then that is very good value, I like the idea that it is a one off unique painting.
I would imagine that most only exibit and hope to occasionally sell one to cover costs of materials, etc. She said she was pleased when she was told she had sold one. I also expect it is nice to get feedback from people who buy paintings too, she seemed a nice lady, as they all seemed. Perhaps all that painting is calming for the soul!

Oh, AL, thank you so much! (Beams happily) Of course it must be the Irony channel - I was just too daft to notice before. After all, I knew it couldn't be the iron-fisted channel anymore so I was puzzled. Its actually very soothing because you can trot off to bed happily after a news broadcast and have happy thoughts knowing what a wonderfully spiffing place the world is. You see, SS, that explains the coverage of South Africa - a country I was trapped in for many years and had a rather difficult time getting out of.(Concerned) Um..is that last sentence one of which Ateliers up with will not put?

Feel free to use preositions at the end of sentences all you like, simpsonromany. As far as I'm concerned anyway.
I love the South African accent. I mostly don't notice accents any more, but that one always has me following the person round and encouraging them to talk.

Re: Litvinenko murder. First I have to say that for obvious reason I am more putinophobic than most of you. Geographical reasons and such, history of course as well.
The murder case has been covered in the media here quite widely. Not too emotionally and in a sort of safe way - mostly referring to british or russian media sources. If anything he was busy with recently has anything to do with the murder of Anna Politkovskaya then it's quite normal that it gets very much attention in media in general. Journalists feel a lot for colleauges, you see.
Assassinations are quite a lot practiced in Russia, so I wouldn't wonder about anything. Still, I don't like this guessing and blaming that goes on and around. Here people mostly prefer to think that Litvinenko was too "uncomfortable" person for official Russia and so he was "removed". More so if he was really investigating anything related to Politkovskaya. And his farewell message (if it was real) aslo pointed that direction.
In Estonia the liberty of media is good, still we prefer to be more analytical and fact based than go for wild guesses and interesting theories.
I personally feel very much for Politkovskaya but I didn't really know much about Litvinenko before he was killed.

Arghhhh!!!!
Blast sentient domestic appliances, I'm working away most of next week so I need to get the washing turned round, however the damn machine obviously has a stress detector and therefore chooses Sunday to fail so I can't get any replacement parts.
Goes to get a soothing and trips over the washing machine parts on the floor.

Bald Bloke, you need a cutout repairman with a spanner in its hand, something life-size. Machines always work when visited by a repairman.

I feel that way about that Indian accent with the sing-song tone to it. Not everyone on the subcontinent has it, so it must be specific to certain Indian regions/states. Or maybe it's Pakistani. Wherever the speaker's from, I think that accent sounds lovely.

Simpson Ray, please don't go! We don't have any other China based salonsistas..
FG - I know what you mean and I'll try and find out for you. I think it depends what generation the immigrants are as well as where they came from, oh and what caste as well.
Putin, murder. I'm sitting back and seeing what happens - I doubt we'll ever know the truth until historians dust of the old papers in 30 years time. Or is it 70.

I've just watched Codex, the show that Bagpuss brought to our attention via the quizzes this week. Goodness me, but the contestants really struggled with their Greek deities.

Sol - double spaced means between the lines - it's quite an easy setting to change on word, so just write it as you normally would and do that bit at the end.
Ps. why do Uni's want things to be double spaced? I'll never know.
