Haven't read any properly yet. However, ref 'salary': Soldiers of the Roman army were given salt rations. Later, the custom changed and soldiers were given money to buy their salt rations. This was called 'salarium argentum', meaning 'salt money'; from which we get the word 'salary'.

Abnother thing I was wondering was whether the Romans used flints. There are several flint quarries in the New Forest which, I thought, were Roman.
