I did follow the explanation of the Conway polynomial calculation 
. The only suggestion I have at this point would be to adjust diagram E to show the crossing described (1) more clearly. All the other diagrams are fine.

I don't know how that happened, Pimms, but thanks for spotting it. I've sent an amended version of the diagram to the eds, and while I was at it I removed the label 3 on the third crossing as it served no purpose.
