A Conversation for The Cranky Gardener

A grand idea I think. There are some people who think that you can harm the soil structure/micro organism balance by digging over the garden/veg plot, even when you're digging good bulky organic matter into it!
Certainly a way to go when digging gets harder (or like me if you'd rather be a lazy gardener ).

Hi Phil. I don't know if it is being lazy as much as just not having time to do things the old tried and true way any more. It just seems like I never stop working these days.
There was a book out years ago - probably 20 - about tips for lazy gardeners. I should look it up and change the word lazy to busy and write a column about it.
Overdigging - especially overtilling - certainly is hard on the earthworms. It makes sense that it would disrupt the nutrient balance in the soil.

I never dig unless I need a hole to put something in. I never dig in organic matter, as that's what worms are for.
It's a cross between being lazy, and not wanting to upset the busy ecosystem/lifestyle of all those creeping/slithering things.
