Why would the fact that the universe is expanding mean it has an end?

I always kinda thought that there was an infinate universe with a finite amount of stuff in it. Am I wrong about the definition of the universe? Is it only the area that has stuff in it, or is it everything, including the empty space? Lol, this big bang thing is the only scientific concept that I have ever had any trouble understanding.
