Well said, Rich. 
The sooner we realise that this site can only survive at the hands of the community, the better.
Adams had a blizzard metaphor, but I prefer to think of it as something living - maybe a garden. The BBC occasionally water it, but it's up to us to feed and propagate it now.
As you said, there is a small hardcore of dedicated researchers who have kept h2g2 going over the last year, but when we lost one or two of those during the summer, things looked bad. We need more writers, but more volunteers too - to keep the momentum going and cope with any future slumps.
