Many Scousers will remember the old, dark green trams of the 1940s.
But did the "eyes" on the front at both sides ever frighten the life out of anyone. I was only an infants/ primary school kid during those
clean-up the bomb-site days and I still recall those tram "eyes" with great fear - especially about 4pm on a wet winter afternoon.
I went to my first Anfield game over 50 years ago long before we
"never walked alone." But we "ferried across the Mersey" all the time.
I left for Australia in the early '60s agreeing with my cousin that
the Silver Beetles were "alright, I suppose." The greatest under-
statement since that guy told Elvis to "Get back into your truck, kid".
It is over 40 years since I last visited Anfield but I've missed it
terribly every season. Even from this distance of 10000 miles it
grieves me to hear how the Principality of Scouseland has declined
(except for the Albert Dock area. It had a population of about
700 000 when I left. It's just over half that now, isnt it?
In those days it was never a lovely place: and Scousers had such a lousy reputation that nobody would volunteer the information that
they were from Liverpool. The accent meant that you never had to !
But the name LIVERPOOL always brings a lump to the throat.
