Am I being a moron? I can't find any of the 'subcribe to user' stuff anywhere.

If you *aren't* using brunel, then switch to it! 
If you *are* using brunel, try going to the PS page of someone and looking on the top-right of it (below the SSO stuff and page name but above any badges and the researcher data) for the panel which previously allowed you to leave someone a message (if they had a valid presence on h2g2) and/or add them to your friends list. That panel now has the subscribe option in it too.
The slightly odd thing is the way the panel leaves a black gap between itself and the main page contents (and also has little blue indicator triangles aligned with each option).
