You Closed Your Eyes

Each morn, when I shed sleep's disguise,

I think of you and swell with pride;

I see your smile, your flashing eyes.

But then I realise.

Your eyes no longer flash at me,

You smile for others happily;

No smile for mediocrity.

My heart too poor for thee.

And so I close my eyes again,

Get out of bed, ignore the pain;

I try to live without my brain.

But thoughts of you remain.

Ecstatic thoughts right through the day,

Sweet glimpses of your wondrous ways,

Your gentle kindness, come what may.

These things you took away.

Each night, when I lie down to sleep,

I think of you, my heart does a leap,

I smile your smile, see eyes blue-deep.

But in my dreams I weep.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
