A Conversation for Talking Point: Is the Digital Age Lowering the Cultural Value of Music?
I don't own an iPod

Not only do I not possess an iPod, I don't own an mp3 player at all (yes, there are others). This is partly because I have something of an aversion to Apple products (although their computers are pretty darn good), but mostly because I don't have enough music to justify it.
Seriously, I probably own more video games than CDs, and I only listen to them very occasionally. There's no real reason for me to copy them all into mp3 format when a discman works perfectly well.

I don't own an MP3 player either.
Just something about how fast everybody decided it was a cool thing to have and they wanted to buy one managed to put me off my lunch a bit. I guess. It was very quick.

Well i dont own an I pod either , But my cd player in the car does play mp3 encoded cd's . Which can hold up to 99 tracks on each disc . now i have just a few mega compilation discs in the car which only have to be changed over once a week or so . This is very convenient and a lot safer than trying to change cd's every 45 mins. At work I have a mp3 encoded dvd which is full of albums it has hours and hours of music on it . Technology is great as long as it is there as a convenience for you , rather than you being a slave to it . Too many people are just consumers , they just want the latest gaget . How many people have expensive cameras but know nothing of composition or depth of field ?

That camera argument can go back as far as consumer cameras have existed, though, it's not specifically applicable to the so-called 'digital age'.
I am in the same boat with the mp3s in the car, but I still prefer to use proper CDs. I only change it at a set of lights or when I'm parked, I just listen to the same CD over on a long trip.
Also, I don't own any mp3 player... okay, I do, but it has Damn Small Linux installed on it now. Teehee.

I don't have an ipod either - I prefer not to listen to music on the move other than in the car. My car is old enough to have a cassette player!
At home I use CDs - I'm gradually transferring any cassettes or vinyl that I cherish onto CD. I have downloaded odd bits & pieces - mostly to use for theatrical sound effects, but also a few ( free ) music tracks. These are either old obscure ones or individual songs I like, but don't want a whole CD by a particular artist. I'd rather buy a CD than pay to download music.
I think the current availability of music is good - hopefully discriminating listeners will emable good musicians to flourish rather than manufactured bands promoted by the music industry.

I agree with you I think taht if you don't have a lot of music it does make sense not to have an mp3 player, but I have over 1,200 songs, and it would be impossible to carry that many cds with me anywhere. That is why I have an Ipod.

Yeah, see...
I have over 10,000 mp3s and over 200 CDs. Granted, the mp3s are mostly from the time when I actually downloaded random music just because it was the 'thing to do', or they're CDs I own that have been converted for jukebox style listening.
I've grown right out of mp3s though, prefer the quality of CD.
