Entry of the Month - September
Created | Updated Nov 1, 2007
Is It What I Think It Is?
No, it's not the pick of the local adult video store, it's our
democratic opportunity to pick the crème de la
crème of the Edited Guide every month, and award it a badge
designed by The Powers That Be and a lot less garish than the thing I
cobbled together for the top of this page and already can't stand the
sight of.
How Does This Work?
As the overlord - ahem, sorry - 'administrator' of this scheme, I
plan to write two Post articles per month. I'm hoping that TPTB, in
the interests of publicising good writing in the Edited Guide, will
also give me a Front Page link or two.
The first article of the month - to wit, this one - will be in
order to discuss and nominate our favourite new Edited Entries from
the previous month. At this point, it would probably be a good idea to
visit the Unofficial Front Page Archives,
if you are not yet acquainted with them.
The second article of the month will be to vote on the shortlist of
nominated Entries and award EOTM status. I don't intend to have secret
ballots or any such rubbish, just a forum (or several) for voting.
What Are The Criteria?
This is either the crowning glory or the thorn in the rose - there
aren't any! What we're looking for are the Guide Entries that have
appealed most to Joe Public over the past month, and people are bound
to have different selection policies. Perhaps your vote might go to
Entries that have amused you, or maybe you'd rather nominate those
that are sparklingly written or on a topic you are particularly
interested in.
All an Entry needs to qualify is to have been put on the Front Page
for the first time in the last month - please check the date when
making your nominations.
Whatever your criteria, please add any of your own
nominations to the forum below. The last thing I want this to do is
turn into a one-man show; I'm trying to practice democracy here,
dammit!
Mu Beta's Shortlist for September 2007
These are my personal favourites; if you'd like to nominate your
own, please post to the forums below.
How To Lose a Tour de France - a
wry look at the current troubles dogging competitive cyclingJack Nicklaus - Golfer -
much-needed biography of a sporting legendSalisbury - a cut above the
average home-town Entry, with plenty of interesting historyPrime Numbers - one of number
theory's most important concepts was well overdue for a Guide
EntryDracula's Ancestors - fascinating
observations on the urban myths of vampiresAlpha - this might split the
scientists from the non-scientists, but the fine structure constant is
an intriguing concept
Again, I would like to emphasise that this is not a definitive
shortlist - please nominate your own favourite Entries. Voting will
commence next week.
