the detroit pistons did indeed win the national basketball league championship 4-1 over the favored los angeles lakers. (there are no lakes to speak of in LA, the franchise moved there from minnesota, the 'land of 1,000 lakes' decades ago and kept the nickname.)
it was truly a team victory, since the lakers feature three perennial all-stars in the immense shaquille o'neil, 40-year-old karl 'the mailman' malone and kobe bryant, but the pistons played as the better TEAM in the series.
