I was having a conversation about this sort of thing with the missus last night. Specifically comparing retellings of standard or traditional narratives with musical cover versions. This I would compare to the Peter Sellers version of A Hard Day's Night.

You have a good solid style and a distinctive voice. Plus it's funny. It's always a pleasure to read a piece of acomplished story-telling.
