I was there. I was one of the nurks parading around on the top of Southsea castle during the show with a musket that didn't go bang, and period costume which didn't fit. However, the canon did go bang on cue; even if the fireworks mob nearly did blow up our gunpowder stock at one stage.
When we were setting up the day before the first night show, we test fired the canon with a toilet roll. You don't use canonballs in these things unless you want to demolish buildings five miles away. The roll landed in a smoking heap right where the mayor was due to be 24 hours later. We hurredly went home and mowed the lawn, and fired grass cuttings instead. Nice bang, lots of smoke, and all the buildings still standing.
Great fun. I'll be back for the 900th year.
