Recent Portsmouth celebrated its 800th centenary. The Dockyard used for Naval and civilian purposes is located on an Island (The island of Portsea which is connected to the mainland via road bridge and rail bridge)
It is home to Horatio Nelson's Flagship The Victory used in the battle of Trafalgar also including Henry the VIII's flag ship The Mary Rose which was sunk just outside the harbour after being to heavy and having all its portholes open for action the ship sank after taking on water.
With only three roads entering the island traffic jams are frequent at rush hour making it difficult to get around at times although there is public transport for the brave! Pompey is the most closely populated area outside of London hence traffic problems But the public transport does allow connections to most major cities including London approx. 90 minutes away, Bristol and Cardiff amongst others. Portsmouth steeped in history was the base for some of the fleet used in the D-day landings of World War 2 and more recently the Falklands conflict.
It has numerous pubs and clubs and has a Football team (soccer) nicknamed POMPEY which held the Football Association Cup for longest period from 1939 to 1945.
