I would extend Mark Twain's conclusion by saying that there are only two types of common sense:
1) That which is not common
2) That which is not sense
The latter if often used by people with an axe to grind when actual factual support for their opinion is slight.
i.e. It is 'common sense' that legalising cannabis will lead to a huge increase in hard drug use.
The phrase is also often used by people familiar with some field to make some outsider feel stupid about they're ineptitude.
I try to avoid using it unless I'm giving a diatribe similar to this one...
