Anyone want a game?
Ed Posted May 23, 2003
Oops. I said the wrong move at the start. Oh well, doesn't bother me
I'll try pawn to d5 (-my intended first move )
Don't bother worrying about lateness.

Now I'M sorry
Knight to c6.
Pretty much done the first semester of uni. Now it's just the exams......

Erk, exams... not good. What are you studying? (you've probably said before, but anyway...)
Anyway. Pawn to d4.

Ed Posted Jun 9, 2003
No, I've not said this before I study arts/science. It's sort of half/half. It's a double degree. Maths, physics, philosophy and classics. It's fun I'm going to try and get rid of the classics. I'm not learning a lot of it and my marks suck.
So...that was a good move I choose bishop to f5.

What are you studying in classics? Philosophy and Maths... hmmm...
Anyway... bishop takes pawn on f4.

Ed Posted Jun 10, 2003
Classics? How am I supposed to know know that? Um....Egypt, Mesopotamia, Greece, Persia and associated thingys. Democracy and all that. I'll likely drop physics next year, because I can't seem to do that anymore (Leaves maths and philosophy....hmmmm....)
Good move again Pawn to h6. (Bad move again)
You only do maths, right?

me[Andy]g Posted Jun 11, 2003
Oh, I see... *that* sort of Classics... I've always been slightly confused by people saying "I study Classics" - it doesn't really tell me very much. Thanks!
My first degree was in Maths only, but now I'm doing a PhD in Geodynamics (plate tectonics and mantle convection) which doesn't really involve much Maths apart from some fluid mechanics and numerical methods / modelling. It's more to do with high performance computing than anything else right at the moment.
Anyway, bishop to b5.

Why plate tectonics? Where's Britain going to be in a zillion years' time? (Will it become part of the Himalayas?)
I am an odd one sometimes

Hmmm, Britain's unlikely to be part of the Himalayas - lots of land in the way! Anyway, my work's really more based on what happens with regard to the feedback between the two systems of mantle convection and plate tectonics.

Erk, I'm beginning to sound more and more like my supervisor (a Canadian) - basically in this case "feedback" just means how each system reacts when you alter something (usually an initial condition) that directly affects one or both of them. So for example one of the things I am going to do is to specify the difference between a divergent spreading ridge boundary between two plates and a boundary where a continental and an oceanic plate collide.
Hmm, that's probably confused you slightly more. Oh well.
Hmm, interesting move. Bishop back to e3 it is then.
Anyone want a game?
me[Andy]g Posted Jun 18, 2003
Oh good
I guess I chose this project because it's a mix of different things that I'd had previous experience of - programming, geodynamics and some maths - with a reasonable amount of new stuff to learn on top - parallel programming, convection equations and so on. Should give me the chance to get a job using parallel computers somewhere I reckon - somewhere like the Met Office maybe.
Hmmm, the attack on my bishops continues... Bishop to e2 it is then.
Anyone want a game?
me[Andy]g Posted Jun 20, 2003
Well I enjoy it at the moment at least... according to the more experienced students in the department, I'll probably get over it sometime in the next few months or so...
Good move...

Ed Posted Jun 20, 2003
Oh Good, wouldn't want to be under the misconception for too long It's weird how uni does that. But I could only imagine it getting better with time.
Good move, ay? I'll fix that - Queen to a4
Yours was a good one. I didn't think of that

me[Andy]g Posted Jun 20, 2003
Maybe it will get better - who knows? I'm only going on what people tell me, really...
