A long time ago Woolworths worked on the same principle: everything cost sixpenxe. So if you wanted a teapot, you paid sixpence for a teapot and sixpence for the lid. This made it a very good place to buy a teapot lid when you'd broken the first one or a small quantity of nails, screws etc. There isn't anywhere that sells such things nowadays. Even open markets seems to have everthing packed in twee plastic bags, so that you either get far too much for a small DIY job or have to buy 42 packets of panel pins.
