Actually they recently did a test on a mock up of the one that was created in Colditz and it actually would have flown.

That's true...saw it on TV, an amazing documentary of the Colditz story. Interesting that most of the early running in escapes was made by the French. Or was it the Dutch? Or the Belgians? Whatever, it certainly wasn't the British.
Still, if it got filmed in Holywood, with its eye for historical detail, it would star Mel Gibson as a 6'5" hero, all of the escapes by Yanks, and the only Brits would be snivelling turncoats.

There is a story in the pipeline and Like U571 it twist history there were less than 30 American's in colditz at liberation yet they will be over half the population of this new film.
