It's great living in Wales... our post almost always has the address spelt wrongly. Usually it's an English person spelling it phonetically. I can understand... after all, our village is called Bwlch.

Don't people get suspicious of the number of people named 'Rees' or 'Jones' in a given area?

As opposed to having strange, unique, highly annoying foreign middle names?

To go back to the original question (sorry, I was enjoying the tangents too), my birth certificate says David Gareth, but I've always been known as Gareth. About 5 years ago, having got sick of people reading the wrong name off forms, I just stopped writing 'David' when I was asked for a full name. I thought I'd try it once & see if anyone complained, and they didn't. So since then, I've got a bank account and credit cards wtihout David on them, and I've successfully applied for the dole, housing benefit and 2 grown-up jobs.

The one obstacle may be that my passport will need renewing soon, and that may require a deed poll to get the name changed. However, before I read this thread it hadn't occurred to me to send the bill to my parents since the whole mess was their daft idea. On the other hand, since I'm not in a particular hurry for a new passport, I might just fill in the form as 'Gareth' and see if anyone grumbles...

I think that in one of Terry Pratchett's Discworld books it says that if you ignore the rules for long enough, then someone will quietly change the rules so that they don't apply to you.

Thats a good one.
I hope they change them soon, though.
