A Conversation for How do I...?

edit my homepage?

I'm pretty new here... I couldn't help but notice, to my annoyance, that my webpage's initial settings
seem to have gone *poof*, meaning that, among other things, there is no 'edit button' accessible for
me to make further changes, submissions, etc. Sure, there's a nice shiney message informing everyone
who bothers to visit my page that I haven't bothered to use the "edit button", but there should at least
be an edit button or two around to correspond, right? Or at the very least a 'please do not push this
button again' button. So what am I missing?

Hi! The 'edit page' isn't so much a 'button' as just words in the goo along the left-hand side of your page. (The 'goo' is just that blue, green and brown stuff.)

If you've allowed h2g2 to set a cookie for you, and you go to your homepage, you should see:

my home
("discuss" will appear here when you've edited your page)
edit page
my details
logout (this only if you've set a password)

Hmm.. But since you've obviously seen my details then you should have seen the 'edit page' part.. Go to the front page ( http://www.h2g2.com/ ) and see if it says,

Welcome back, .
(Click here if this isn't your email address)

If it doesn't, and instead it has the 'register' button, then you haven't had your cookie properly set. Make sure you allow h2g2 to set a cookie, otherwise it doesn't know who you are. You can logout (which will clear the cookie) if you're sharing a machine or have other reasons you don't want your information remaining in your cookie file. Each time you come to the site, you'll have to login.

Meanwhile, back to your problem...

Once you're set up to allow the cookie you can do one of two things...
Go back to your welcoming email and click that link again. If you've deleted it, then just click register. I -think- you can enter your information on the next page. If I'm wrong, there will be a place telling you where to go. If you can't remember any of that, then you can go to where you register and put in the same email address you did the first time. h2g2 is pretty smart, and if you do this, rather than registering you again, it will know you're already a researcher and just send you another email with a nice link. smiley - winkeye

Hope all this helps. smiley - winkeye

'Nonnie
(Eagerly awaiting your discuss button. smiley - bigeyes)

Thanks much anonymouse; I figured out that my problem had to do with
the system I was using, which interfered with the cookie system used
by h2g2. A bug, sort of. Anyways, the information is appreciated...
I still think the powers that be should include a 'please do not push this button again' button somewhere in the guide. Drop by my page sometime and read the wonderful prose posted there.

Where... there are quite a few 'don't click here' things on user pages... most of them bring up the 'who's on line' script. smiley - winkeye
