So here I am, reinventing the wheel over at my (fairly) new userpage, and now I find that you've done all the music-link work for me. Thanks. What I'm about to do is put up a link to this entry in my space and consequently save myself buttloads of work and [article removed for moderation] frustration.
Anyone who'd include the Rutles and Pearls Before Swine is doing something right! It seems, though, that your King Crimson link is doing something weird 'coz it ain't going through this morning in Chapel Hill, NC...
Thought I'd suggest this place to Dragonfly, who's thinking of compiling a 'Music Library' of sorts for the Musehome.
Again, thanks for all the hours of work devoted to putting this list together.
(But c'mon - Celine Dion? - ewwww)

Thank you! I'll take a look at the King Crimson link; if the site it linked to has vanished I'll try to find an alternative.
As regards Celine, I agree wholeheartedly with your reaction to her! The Jukebox began as a list of links to sites for acts I like, but over the months it's gone way beyond that. I'm now aiming to include as many major acts as possible plus the less well-known ones that I like, or that people request. (Pearls Before Swine was a request - to be honest, I hadn't heard of them).
To be deliberately excluded, a popular act would have to be seriously offensive - rather than just very smug and dull like Celine.

If I was to duplicate something as useful as this, I would, in fairness, also include performers/groups who would normally wind up on my 'dreck' list. My father used to make us listen to Porter Wagoner, fer pity's sake! [I like best 'Rolling Stone's description: "Celine Dion doesn't sing a song - she upholsters it."]
'Pearls Before Swine' released 'The Use of Ashes' +/- '70, and we used to listen to it stoned so much that it became one of those albums that could get you high from just listening to it - no medication involved. Of course, as highly-sophisticated college freshmen, we were mature enough to handle it...
If you are still updating this list, I could send over new links for your consideration as I find time to do the research.
My mind is still boggled at this accomplishment. Glad I searched for an h2g2 Cyndi Lauper link and found your's. [Sometimes I have a 'Laibach' day; some days it's the (original) 'Spice Girls'...]

Thank you again!
I have found a new King Crimson link, and will add it tomorrow, along with a few more new links: The Avalanches, The Strokes, not sure who else yet.
My problem in maintaining the Jukebox page is that every time I change anything, the moderation system hides the page. I have therefore come to an arrangement with the h2g2 powers that be under which every time I make changes, I e-mail Abi (the deputy Community Editor) with the new links, whereupon she checks them and then puts the page back online, usually within a day.
As I have to go though that palaver, it makes sense to add links in batches, rather than just putting in one or two. I'll be adding a batch tomorrow, so if you can think of anyone who should be included on the page and isn't, please name them today!

I've been having the exact same problem. Sheesh!
Might have time to get something to you today - might not. How would I get you a link to check since we can't put URL's in forums? Or do I just submit a list of artists?

If you want to leave a list of artists, that'll be fine; but if you do know of some particular sites that you think I should include, you could e-mail the URLs to me. If you look on my Personal Space, near the bottom of the page there's a header that says "Contact me!", under which is an e-mail link.

Ok. Will email stuff when I can get to doing a proper list for you. More than likely not today, so don't wait for me. Next time maybe.
For the time being, I do have a few links [and some unlinked*] at the bottom of my userpage that you don't. Feel free to use or improve any that strike your fancy.
*[the 'Betty' and 'BIF Naked' links I had kept shutting down my page, I think because of some Java-y kind of thing on the website. I don't know enough about computers yet to know for sure that that was the problem, but my page came back after I deleted them. Ditto 'Phillip Glass'] [?]
Thanks again.
[Oh, you might look for the 'Donnas'; they're pretty good, and I don't remember that you had them.]

I have now done that update as promised. I've re-routed the King Crimson link to a great Crimson/Robert Fripp site I found. I've also added new links for The Donnas, Philip Glass, Eva Cassidy and Harry Chapin among others.

Muy Excellento! I've roughed in a list of about a dozen like, totally obscure and unknown artists to email to you fairly soon. Want to check it against your existing ones first.
Hope your Phillip Glass works better than my Phillip Glass did.
Have you considered sub-categorizing the list in any way other than 'alive' and 'dead'? [Rock; Pop; Metal; Classical; World; Crap - you know, the usual pigeonholes. Like the ones those record clubs that screw the artists out of their royalties use...]
Oops - my politics is showing. Time to go.
Thanks again for the links and the converstaion.

I've just checked my Philip Glass link again and it works just fine. Take a look!
I have thought about further sub-division, especially now that "alive and beginning with S" alone runs to over 70 links! But trying to categorise acts by genre is a minefield into which I'd rather not venture. The page is time-consuming enough without having to deal with posts along the lines of "You , how dare you call the fantastic... 'dance' when they're actually the kings of semi-detached house", or whatever.

Hey! Hey! Hey! I know! How 'bout: "Music" and "Not Music By Any Stretch of the Imagination"?? Huh? I dunno - it might work...
Listening to Gregorian chants right now. Very mellow. But, since it's just past midnight here, I think I'll pack it in.
Later. (Leider?)
