A Conversation for Talking Point: Thank you very much, but...

That really is what I got for Christmas...

What about you?

Normally I get fun presents, but there is the occasionally cringe-maker.

I still "treasure" a bottle of NON ALCOHOLIC wine and a photo of my sister's husband that she sent me several years ago. I must have upset her really badly, as (a) I am seriously not teetotal, and (b) I can't stand her husband.

(fun presents from my other sisters have included a two-metre tall hot-air balloon, and a sample of malt whiskies)

The husband photo one is great. My mother in law gave me a rock. Just one that she'd found. That was fairly odd.

One Xmas I gave my bro-in-law a tape of compiled music that apparently made him wretch. The following Xmas I got a very similar tape - same brand, etc. full of music he likes. If I didn't like the music I would have taped over it again and that would have made another good present - but it is actually quite good - It is still in my car.

I got _exactly_ what I wanted for Christmas. (mind you, the dropped hints six months earlier were so heavy that if they'd been ignored, I'd have had to pay for therapy for at least one giver)
BTW have you noticed that clothes are almost always wrong - this year being the exception that proves the rule. ? You can hide the wrong underwear even if you can't take it back, but what do you do with a woolly scarf and hat set? (yes, they do still exist)

Why do people give that sort of thing? You're right, clothes are almost invariably wrong. I was given a jumper a couple of years ago with a ski-ing teddy on it. Um, no, I never did wear it. I'm more of a GAP girl myself smiley - smiley

About all I got were socks - which is a good idea as they fit, and my old ones had holes in them. I also got a chocolate orange and a book on French cuisine .

The worst gifts I ever received were (wait for it), a Mr. Man on a spring to hang from the ceiling, and an oversized Mr Man comb.

I was in my late teens at the time.

My relationship with the family member concerned has never really recovered.

Which Mr. Man was it?

I think the one on the spring was (ironically) Mr Happy.

The comb one I can't remember. Possibly Mr Large Foot You Pull Through Your Hair.
