Duck tape is a brand of the stuff generically known as "Gaffer tape", a cloth-based tape available in various widths and colours, but usually two inches wide and black. (There's another brand name version called "Gaffa tape", fyi)
Duct tape is shiny aluminium tape used to cover small cracks where heating ducts have been riveted together, usually three inches wide with a white heat-resistant adhesive and a backing of greaseproof paper.
