New Directions Course for Women
This is a course that is run by most local education authorities. It is for women who want to
increase their options and discover their potential. If you are with or without formal qualifications
this course will help you decide where you are going and how to put your skills and talents to good
use. The class atmosphere is relaxed and informal and you can gain Open College Credits. The aim of
the course is to try out new subjects, find out about further study, training opportunities and
career possibilities and to have fun.
The course consists of:
- Introduction - What you want from the course and what you you do not want.
- Knowing Yourselves - To begin to explore who you are, to look at the influences on your lives, to
look at the variety of relationships. - Skills - To start to think about skills, to analyse your skills, to think how your skills can be
transferred. - Goals - To introduce the idea of goals, to identify what is important to the individual, to
identify some personal goals. - Study Skills - To think about the praticals of returning to study, managing your study.
- Assertiveness - To identify some of the key skills for clear, positive and effective
communication, to explore aggressive, non-assertve and assertive behaviour. - Women and work and CV writing - A brief history of women at work through the ages, an
impressionable CV. - Time Management and/or Stress Mangagement - A look at your spare time and how you can
manage it, increase or decrease? Brief look at signs and symptoms of stress and what you can do to
relieve it. - Taster Courses and the Final Session - Looking back, Looking Forward, next steps, Course
evaluation.
