The Trial was written 1914/15 - before the end of WWI and therefore not as a comment on the rise of fascism post-1918. However, it has, along with several other works by German authors, been interpreted as prophetic, perhaps drawing on the tendency towards authoritarianism that already existed within the German government at the time. There are many possible interpretations of all Kafka's works, none of which can claim to be a definitive answer to the problem of his writing. Other possible interpretations of The Trial include - but are not limited to - the externalisation of the conscience; a metaphor for the complexity of personal and psychological conflicts; and a simple autobiographical account of his engagement to Felice Bauer.

The metamorphosis was also written in 1915 and so couldn't describe the various economic tensions between the two wars. However, thats not to say that people didn't relate to the piece during these times.
