It all goes to show that Douglas Adams was far ahead of his time.
Here's another little-known fiction:
The government of Upsilon Beta 3 (a strangely beautiful blue planet with an oxygen atmosphere - very like Earth really) spent twenty trillion Flurggs on developing the non-stick pan, which was supposed to transform the lives of the Upsilonians, but only five were ever made.
It did have a useful spin-off however; space travel.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
