Hi vectusian here,
Does any one know where I can get hold of the songs that were sung by my grandfather on the Isle of Wight.
It is a long time since I was last there, and before I am too old I would like to collect some of them.So I can learn to sing them. Any imformation relating to the Isle of Wight would be gratfully received.Another thing is there a group that try to keep the Isle of Wight Dialect
going, If so drop me a line to this column, as I am always dropping in for A chat. Althou I seem to be the only one chatting to vectusian.
Regards vectusian

Hi vectusian here, Is there no one out there that knows anything about
this topic. I really do want to get hold of anything to do with the song of the peasentry. I have been away from the Isle of Wight for
40 odd years and is to much to ask the names of the people that could help me with my task.

Hi vectusian
So sorry for the delay - we have been on holiday at The Post and are now trying to catch up with everything. Once this week's edition is done and dusted I'll try to make enquiries for you... perhaps you would like to write a short article about your interest in the songs and dialect? It would possibly attract more reponses.

Hi Shazz, Thanks for answering my pleas,Now my interest in these songs
and dialect is the fact that someone has to keep these songs a live.
I find I would be happy to learn them as I have always enjoyed singing
as well as being envolved for a long time. With the dialect I might find
someone out there with the same interest that we can communicate with each other in the dialect that has been lost because of speaking with
a plum in ones mouth. Tradation is some thing that we should retain
even if life as it will, go on regardless. While we can enjoy the relaxed way of yesterday year. I hpoe this gives you a bit of where
I am coming from on this subject.
yours,
Vectusian.

Hi vectusian
You are correct! I have tracked down your book too - the full details are:
Title: Songs of the soil. Isle of Wight dialect
Author: Stone. Percy G.
Publication details: Newport. County Press. 1933
Description: 53p
Shelfmark: YA.1988.a.19302
I think it *is* possible to order photocopies of the book but you would need to check this out for yourself. It works out quite expensive - somewhere around £40.00 plus Reproduction Fees if they apply.
You need to go to http://www.bl.uk/services/copy/reproduction.html
(www dot bl dot uk / services / copy / reproduction dot html) incase the link goes missing - or email me from the Post Office and I'll send it on to you.
This is the branch of the British Library which deals with these transactions. The page has links down the left side - including an online order form (under the 'Remote Ordering' section)
Good luck and let me know how you get on!
