I think this is very good.
My only suggestion would be that you could be more specific about dates, to give a clearer sense of how this one person's story is contextualised by the history of the rest of the twentieth century.

I'd be interested to know how you got on with the style of it, since style is a thing you seem very at home with. Did you find yourself switching off in places?

yes, I'm very au fait with style, it's substance I have the problem with.

No, I didn't. I think you whip through a varied and interesting life with plenty of pace, so never get bogged down in detail.
