So much to like about him and so much to despise, but he was certainly a character.

His brother was a little perculiar too - he was a parson for 26 years when he converted to Catholicism - then back to CofE - when he declared Rome "The Whore of Babylon - adulterous and idoltorous" He then converted back to Catholicism and became a priest - yet when he died he had a Catholic requiem and an Anglican burial, and throughout it all remained as big a xenophobe as his brother.
Your guy also opposed Catholic emancipation, Jewish emancipation, public libraries (on the grounds he didn't enjoy reading and couldn't see why anyone else would) and the repeal of the corn laws.

I knew about the Catholics, Jews & Corn Laws but I didn't want him to look all bad Didn't know about the libraries though

Thank you so much for this!!
This is what I love about this place, the wonderful eccentrics and topics that are all too often ignored, but should be celebrated.
Wonderful
More of the same please!!

I liked this a lot SWL, but could I suggest you put the gents name in the title - that way he'll come up in a search.

Yes indeed - now the page has gone all wide. I'd let the sub sort that one out.
Do you not do links then SWL

I suppose
Usually I wait to see if a piece is going to be bombed out of PR before I go through it for links.
It looks like this might make it, so I'd better get started.

It's been here for 2 weeks already - if it was going to get bombed out it would have gone off by now.

I love it!
Short conjunctions and prepositions need not be capitalised in titles.
He saw the Exhibition as a forerunner of national catastrophe arising from: the corruption of morals by hypocritical foreigners; the desecration of the Sabbath; political disunion; an increase in poverty; and national bankruptcy.
The colon after /from/ is, I think, unnecessary.
Although somewhat gruff, the British people always displayed a fondness for Sibthorp, perhaps enjoying his eccentricities or possibly because he gave a voice to opinions which they secretly shared.
A classic dangling participle. The clause /although somewhat gruff/ applies to the subject, /the British people/, when it should apply to Sibthorp.
Although he was somewhat gruff, ....
TRiG.

I'd like to be a procrastinator, but I never get around to it.

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.
If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.
Thanks for contributing to the Edited Guide!

Flippin' Eck - who said the EG was slow ? I never got a chance to do any of the changes or links. I do exist in RL you know, and my boss has an annoying habit of requiring my presence from time to time.
Seriously, it would have been nice to have had an "Everybody happy with this?" post before whisking it off to editing or the Front Page. I've had such posts before with other Entries.

List what you want done here, SWL. Your sub will read the thread before doing anything, ok?
See? The price of success - your babies are whisked out from under your nose
