The h2g2 Poem

Dogs I've Known
I had a dream last night that I
Went to that kennel in the sky
Where doggie buddies gone before,
Met me wagging at the door.
Some fuzzy faces I'd not seen
Since long before I was a teen
Came to say 'they knew me when'
And I was welcome in their den.
Foxy was an afghan hound
That once in fields with me did bound
She'd follow us from dawn to dark
Without a single dog-like bark
And Rex the shepherd big and strong
Who bit the burglar doing wrong
When he did try to wreck our car
I bet he left an eight-inch scar!
Then Tippy one and Tippy two
Came up to say 'twas those two who
Would tap and dance round Grandma's feet
When through her back door we did meet.
And there was Rufus, a beagle mix
Not that bright, and knew no tricks
You had to hide the wine from him
Or all his senses soon grew dim.
And let's not leave out Sugarbear
The biggest dog that I would share
My friendship with so many years
His death drew rivers of my tears.
Kira and Stirling, and Diamond Jack
Plus Rosebud, dobermans, that's a fact
With hearts so big and eyes so round
And their devotion so unbound.
Sasha and Dulcy, two giant breeds
Bernard and Dane were their seeds
Two Borzois I knew too,
Their grace amazing as they flew!
Corky found pheasant for me alone
Even though he was deaf as a stone.
My chest would swell in bursts of pride
When we did hunt the riverside.
Shari, Dutchess, Kelso, Willow,
Hounds and hunters shucked off my pillow,
Not all dogs were born to roam
The hillsides that I called my home.
No, some were simply meant to stay
Inside or in the yard to play.
And so we tried to give a home
To those with no real need to roam.
And sometimes fate would not be fair.
Was Murphy eaten by a bear?
So I watch Riley as he grows
This Jack Russell Terrier won't have such woes!
When down in Louisville I go see
Kelso and Willow who bark at me
But they are just galoots
In fuzzy weimerainer suits!
Popeye is my hunter now,
Covering ground like a one-blade plow.
If there's a bird left in these hills
I'll see it fly before he's still.
So finding that my long-lost friends
Found their way home there in the end,
I came back here to face the day
And left them all up there to play.
Someday I'll go to stay for good
And be together as we should
To bark at noises and romp in fun
Then to bask in noonday sun
Until that time I'll have to keep
Their faces in my memories deep.
Someday I'll follow in their tracks
I'll be there yet to join the pack.
