I don't know enough about physics to tell you whether you're right about everything, but it all seems to match up with what my highschool physics teacher told us

Have you read "Black Holes and Timewarps - Einstein's Outrageous Legacy" by Kip S. Thorne? It's a fascinating read, and covers both the science (at a readable level ) and the history of the discoveries made in that area. It's published here in the UK by Picador, and ('scuse me whilst I grab it from by bookcase...) was first published in 1994. Well worth a look.
