QI- Where am I
shagbark Started conversation Nov 3, 2011
since our regular quizmasters seem to be taking a break, I thought I would step in with an easy one.
I went North 54 paces, then turned right went four paces, then turned right again went four paces, then turned and went south 4 paces.
the question is Where am I? Caution- there are three klaxons here.

46 paces north and 4 paces east of where you started.

I'm sure that's staggering directions from the Tav on Ecclesall Road to my old student flat (if you miss out the takeaway)...

I would guess you could go north from magnetic north rather than true north... which of course was not the answer but perhaps a little interesting

Presumably this rests on the fact that the third leg of your journey was in a southbound direction, so the fourth leg is nonsensical because you wouldn't need to turn to go in a south direction.
That might imply that you were at the North Pole between the third and fourth legs, but you can't be there because you went south immediately previous, and you can't end up at the North Pole by going in a southerly direction...

which should have clued you in the answer was on the other end of the world.
post 6 is basically a right answer
I was prepared to accept antarctica, near the Amundsen Scott Station, or about .05 km from the South Pole as the answer.

Notice that I nevr used the words E or W as these would be arcs not lines that near the pole.

the third leg would not have been true south because I was walking in straight lines and the East-West Line was an arc not a line
so the third leg would not have been true south and would have left me about 50 meters from the pole whereupon I could walk due south.

Well I couldn't work all that out, but the fact you had to turn to walk South tipped me off to what was happening.
