Deadangel - Still not dead, just!

InfiniteImp,

Feel free to squabble away. It helps when I get things wrong. E.g. the human eye sensitivity.

You're also right that water is blue - it's blue because it absorbs (or filters if you prefer) the other light spectra, allowing blue light to penetrate further.

Re the red sunsets, there's also the lensing effect to take into account. The blue end of the spectrum has been refracted more, so will be missed in the higher levels of light earlier in the day.

My explanation of the science that lay behind this QI was not accurate or clear, so I ran it past the brains at Science Explained (SEx) who gave it the once over - and you can read the deliberations here:

Well I wanted to make sure when I re-read these forums in future that the information in them is accurate.

Red light is longer and less energetic than the other colours. I'm not arguing on how far they poernetrate because I'm pretty sure you're right on that one, but red is definitely the longest wavelength and lowest energy of the visible spectrum. Blue and violet are the most energetic, followed by ultraviolet which is invisible but gives you sunburn.
