A Conversation for Talking Point: Ideal Homes

my dream home is a place in the west end of newcastle upon tyne, which i used to pass on the way to school and thought it looked perfect. it's a real old original manor house, with 2 wings, leaded windows, lots of chimneys (so presumably lots of open fires), a big drive up to the house through large cast iron gates, big garden with lots of beautiful mature english trees, and even a stream in the garden! and it's only a few miles from the city centre. i'd love to have a look inside it.

as far as interiors go, i'd love to have a big "country kitchen" stylee kitchen, with an aga or other similar type large oven/hob, loads of cupboards & open shelves, a dresser (so i can show off my grandma's crockery), pans & dried herbs hanging from a rack off the ceiling, and a big table that family/friends can sit around and chat (and hopefully help out!) while i'm cooking.

i also need a room that i can use as a library, especially now my (already extensive) book collection has now been added to by my fiance's books and most of my dad's books. the best private library i've ever seen was at sr walter scott's house (a long 2 storey room with spiral staircases, i seem to remember) but i don't need anything that big; an average sized bedroom with shelves floor to ceiling, wall to wall, plus space for a comfy seat or 2, a coffee table and a small stereo would do. oh, and a nice big north-facing window so i can also sit in there and do my cross-stitch.

something else i'd love to have is a sunken bath. when at uni, i lived in a house one year that had such a thing, which is even more amazing when you consider that it was a 2 bed, 150 year old cottage! the bathroom (in the "new" extension, a mere 90 years old) was double the size of my bedroom and had not just the sunken bath (with lots of space all the way round it for smelly bath stuff, candles and drinks) but also a larger than normal shower (about half as big again as yer standard). aah, bliss!
