for the whinge but, how can we Aces do our job when there's a permanent glitch on our newbie page?
I'm referring to 'Only show users from this site'
I have this permanently ticked, and still users from message boards/other sites show on the list, this one for instance - U9938090
We, or at least I, and I assume I'm not alone, get hassle from users of non-hootoo boards/sites when we post our Welcome message on their non-hootoo page.
Is this a skin thing, yet another thing that doesn't work as I choose to use Alabaster, or is it the same for all skins?

It's the same in all skins, Em, and personally, I ignore these users - as I think I advised you to do the other day. I've had my share of 'feedback' from users from other messageboards I aced, I won't do that again.

Yes, I know those that are obviously non-hootoo newbies are easily ignored Bel. It's the ones that have no message on, the ones where we can't tell whether or not they registered with h2g2 I'm concerned with.
It's the pages like the one I linked to in my original post that proves that particular feature is not working.

So far, I haven't had trouble with those who had no post on their PS, but I agree, those from other boards shouldn't show up on our list. Apparently, the majority of them isn't even aware they have signed up with hootoo.

This is precisely why, for ages now, i mainly unless a newbie actually posts on the "i'm new, what do i do?" thread on here, but often by the time i get there, they've already been ACE'd.
This glitch has been with us for far too long & more & more ACE's are handing in badges. I do think it's time something was done.

I just welcome them anyway - and if they reply and say that they don't understand why they have been welcomed by someone from h2g2, I just say something like
"It's to do with the Single Sign-on thingy - there is no obligation to take part in h2g2 but we hope that you will look around and maybe like what you find. It gives you an option which you can or cannot take advantage of "
We were advised some time ago that it is ok to welcome them all, and I have picked up a few new participants for hootoo this way.
Personally, and I'm sorry if it upsets anyone, it doesn't bother me.
I would also like to say that recently I have found the list not so arduous, thanks to so many more ACEs taking the time to clear it - thank you everyone and I still check every newbie to make sure that they haven't simply posted to their own space.

Hello Aces. You can tell who has been on which site by looking at the MA My Articles page (this works in all skins except brunel interestingly). Every time you join a new message board a page called No Subject appears on the list of articles. At the message boards they don't have User Pages or the ability to unsubscribe. Every now and then there is a little spat and the idea that if someone clicks on your name they can see all your postings is mentioned again, and then people who don't yet know will be told that the way to escape this is to unsubscribe from all your postings and the way to unsubscribe is to go to h2g2 as we have the power. So they haven't joined as such, they have come to h2g2 in order to be able to unsubscribe from their messageboard postings. This is an example of the type of conversation that goes on at message boards that leads to people realising they can unsubscribe using h2g2. WARNING - THIS LINK GOES TO POINTS OF VIEW MESSAGEBOARD http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/mbpointsofview/F2131439?thread=4926255 This doesn't really help you in the ACEing of course as you can't tell who may have joined as they wanted to join h2g2 for itself and who joined just to unsubscribe from postings. However I can't see other mentions of the "they come here just to unsubscribe from postings" conspiracy theory , so I thought I would mention it.

Thanks for that. I've read through the first 20 posts and I don't get it. Why would anybody want to remain on a messageboard where they are being stalked or attacked?
And why don't they use the official channels to defend themsleves against that?
And from my experiences with people here: most people (I included) unsubscribe from conversations because the threads have gone quiet, or out of control with aggressive posters in them, or because they have lost interest in a conversation. True, there are a few who, like those on that messageboard, unsubscribe to delete their post history - but these people clearly are trying to hide somnething (well, those I know of, that is).
Key: Complain about this post
