OK, I'll try and keep quiet about having a page here 'On Duty' ACEs and 'On Call' are seperately listed.

Whilst not an ACE, and not having the know-how to be one, may I just say that Joe C has been a great help to me and my fiancee.
You all do a good job, for nothing, to look after those of us who dont know as much about computer stuff as you do.
Keep up the good work, and dont fall out.
Regards and thanks,
and
PS This person will sign out and not come back, as only needed to sort a problem.

I dont think that will work Aces all ready promissed to welcome new researchers in there free h2g2 time and some still cant be bothered to do it then but are happy to have the badge on there page and the same people have to spend hours doing 200 welcomes from the start of the day to everning when they have time to come on
I actually came up with a idea a white badge for 3 months before you get your yellow badge a training where fully fledged Aces can keep a eye every so often on welcomes attitued and makeing sure they are been as helpfull as possible any one who dosent make the grade dont move on to a fully fledged Ace hood

That's possible. But the ACEs would have to choose athier prefered days. That means actually saying something on ACEforum. Not replying to the request for ones choise of days/ staement of wishing to remain an ACE would cull the ACE ranks abit and gives all an idea of are and are not commited to the scheme.
Then once ACEs are assigned days of their chosing where they are obliged to do some welcoming then on the following days it will be possible to see who failed to do any. They can be sent an e mail by the italics to ask what stopped them from doing there ACEing if they did sign in a take part elsewhere in the community. Those that repeateedly fail to perforn on their rota'd day can be asked to leave the scheme if the italics considered it necessary.
It not being your rota'd day wouldn't stop anyone from doing some welcoming if they have the time and inclination.

Hi Intern
Hmmmmm, I don't think it's fair to say some ACEs can't be bothered. I suspect it's more a case of lack of time, or r/l changes, or sometimes simple 'frame of mind' plus some ACEs do other 'ACEy things' that doesn't include welcoming newbies.
For instance, if an ACE has had a rough day, they may want to log in relax and wind down, without having to put their ACEs hat on and 'work' (some, including myself, have second accounts for this) IMO that's not "not being bothered", that's human nature
Another Hmmmmmm to some researchers reading this thread, it may seem the ACEs have a big problem, I don't think that's case, it's just a small problem that has been building up for a long time, that we're discussing in the open, a lot of good ideas have been suggested, I hope some will get further discussion.

Actually, there *are* some ACEs who can't be bothered. I've noticed one or two who are on h2g2 a lot and don't do any ACEing. Fair enough, I haven't done any ACEing for a few days - mind you, I've ACEd a fair amount this past while and I'm giving myself a rest so I don't get sick of ACEing, mostly for the sake of keeping the list down (which should not be happening) - and if you've had a hard day, sometimes all you do want to do on hootoo is to chill out and not 'work'.
However, the problem still remains that there are too many people clinging onto their badges and not earning them.

I have a lot of things goimg on RL, and have had for a year. I still give as much commitment to the scheme as I feel I can and remain fair to the new researchers I'm ACEing. I'll often spend at 3 days away from the computer. And I have still felt like I am letting the side down.
I think there more than just the problems with people not applying themselves to their ACE duties and that there is more to discuss.

You have a valid reason Stealth, and you of all people should not feel guilty. You're a shining example to the masses

Stealth...
thats not a bad idea but you do have one floor i guess a family emergancy dosent pre book and if there have been laps before that and on the verge of been booted out that would be unfair i would have just said unlucky tho
alltho i would bring that up there might be a way around it
Emmily....
hello
i will have to dissagree here like ford said there are way to many Aces clinging onto there badges and not doing anything except ansering and chating to there online freinds fair enough if they did and some point do a couple of welcomes every now and again.I know you mort loup and a few hve done a very big part of the Aceing mort more so
If you cast your mind back i had this argument in the forum about Aces role when it came to welcomeing new researchers i will not put what i said as i feel that the Ace rule for that would still apply to me so i will scurt around the issues
1)If Aces are not to claim to be the only ones to be able to welcome newbies
why????
why is it the list still never gets done???
Aces have to go back over the welcomes that have been botched ie no links to relivent places or the link that are done do not work
why was it that half dissapeard from the list then some one complained that they had not got a welcome
so i would just say that in the long run it would be a lot easyer on the Aces for them just to do it insted of looking for half baked jobs of a welcome haveing to re do 50 botched attempts which also detracks from there time
i had the argument with mina who was staff and Abby who was staf at the time when will Aces reolise they dont care how many do they welcome how many times do they go looking for the people who vanish from the list when some one thinks ill welcome them and changes there mind they might of thought we are staff what we say goes no matter what i dont know water under the bridge now tho
I agree it isnt such a major problem as yet but realy its better geting it sorted out cull the list i have had reef girl post a message on the volunteer page whats happerning asking why its taken from the time i was a ace and talking to her saying it shouldnt be long to now not haveing a reply from staff/Ace?????

Ok,Ok not welcoming newbies can be a 'sore subject' for some ACEs, who say there's more to being an ACE then welcoming the newbies. I've had that reply since I first mentioned in aceforum that it was the minority of ACEs doing most of the welcomes, I was just trying to keep things calm
Since the resent changes, there are more newbies, as they appear on the 'New Researchers List' before activating their page.
(A little off topic) I find there are even less replies from welcomes than there was before, and it's harder, often not possible to make the welcome message personal, as the space has not been 'activated' there's nothing there to personalise.

im still calm
i have noo plans to fall out over the subject i just thought it needed adressing a long with a few others (at the time) and we was brushed off
i found that less and less was replying to welcomes i left when i was a Ace
didnt they change the format for that so Aces could still leave a message even tho they didnt do a into or post to a message

OK. Right.
Idea....
What about all the ACE's being e-mailed by the Italics asking them to come up with ideas. Have advanced warning that this will happen. For example, a note on ACE forum advising that on.....25 July an e-mail will be sent out asking for ideas. Stick a time frame on it (say 2 weeks for those who are on holiday or have something to deal with in RL) for the ACE's to think of an idea.
Then....post the ideas somewhere, ie ACE forum or a given A page on here (give, say a week, for this to be done).
Then, and only then can the ideas be dealt with one at a time. Those that the majority of the ACE's agree to can then be put to the Italics (and/or the community) for their opinion.
Key: Complain about this post
