Atypical pneumonias (work in progress)
Created | Updated Sep 21, 2005
Introduction
Atypical pneumonia is a pneumonia affecting the lung tissues (interstitium) as opposed to the lung spaces (alveoli) - technically it is a pneumonitis. The importance is that atypical pneumonias are different in Xray appearance and physical examination from typical pneumonia - the chest often sounds quite clear. They require different antibiotic treatment as well.
