Entry: A History of Doncaster Rovers F.C - A21380924
Author: Cal - interim high priest of the Church of the Holy Tail - U193866

I'm not really a football fan, infact I have only ever been to one football game in my life, that was when I was 5 years old, and it was to watch Doncaster Rovers. My mum had knitted my a blue scarf and hat, with DONCASTER ROVERS written in red across them. My first and last football match, I'm more of a Rugby Union man.

Even so I found myself getting quite emotional over the last few paragraphs of this entry.

anyhoo enough waffle

Ok, here we go:

Lose the full stop from 'FC' in the title.

After being relegated out of the football league - relegated from the

The club was first set up in 1879. It was set up as a team... - you use 'set up' twice, very close together. How about 'The club was inaugurated in 1879' or 'In 1879, the club was formed'?

F.A Cup - no full stop in House Style

bottom of division 2 with only 8 points - bottom of Division Two, with only eight points

by the F.A. - no full stops

You write in the past tense throughout the opening paragraphs, then when you get to 'Many Good Things From A Beautiful Small Town' you slip into the present. Some of these will need changing, for example 'During the 1946/47 season Doncaster Rovers *held* the record for the most wins.'

Copy and paste this over your current blockquote:

A lone bugler sounded the last post before Doncaster Rovers finally called time on Football League status. Ken Hawley sounded the famous tune to mark the end of an era as the town's club completed a tragic season which has seen them win only four matches and lose all but a handful of their professional players.- The Doncaster Star, Monday 4 May, 1998.

During the 1990's - 1990s

blamed Ken Richardson for effectively killing Rovers club - for effectively killing their club? For effectively killing Rovers?

Glyn Snoddin - Snodin

against Huddersfield Town F.C - guess what? smiley - smiley

Quotes section - again, just copy and paste:

I believe the nightmares of the past are over and only sweet dreams will follow. The club is now on the right footing. - George Best.

I can't think of any other football club that has endured the same traumas as Doncaster Rovers. Thankfully, true fans are now in charge at the Club.- Kevin Keegan.

Mention Doncaster Rovers and I am reminded of a Saturday afternoon at Bramall Lane and my first experiance of a sending off. Charlie Williams, as I remember, was dispatched for inserting his right boot in Doc Pace's shorts! I am delighted that the decline in Rovers fortunes has been arrested and that, like Charlie Williams, Rovers seem to be smiling again!- Howard Wilkinson.

Nice job, well done!

apart from 'blamed Ken Richardson for effectively killing Rovers club - for effectively killing their club? For effectively killing Rovers?'

What do you mean? Don't forget I'm not into football so Rovers and the club are exactly the same thing to me

It just sounds odd to say 'Rovers club' - it's a bit like saying 'I sat on the armchair sofa' smiley - smiley Just say either:

for effectively killing their club

or

for effectively killing Rovers

You missed a couple in the 'Many Good Things...' section:

1970 Doncaster Rovers rejects Kevin Keegan as a player, apparently because he is too small. - In 1970, Rovers rejected Kevin Keegan as a player, apparently because he was too small.

Season 2005/06 sees Doncaster Rovers beat Manchester City and Aston villa in the League Cup. - Season 2005/06 saw Doncaster Rovers beat Manchester City and Aston Villa in the League Cup.

I really like this. As a Torquay United supporter (actually, *the* Torquay United supporter) it's great to read Entries about smaller clubs. Cracking job, and thanks for the good read smiley - ok

Good entry Cal - one of those that made me go 'I never knew that' smiley - winkeye

Couple of typos:

to the Rovers ground, apparently --> needs a space after the comma
Richardardson --> Richardson (last paragraph)

I don't suppose there's a link to a news story about the gas explosion that did for Belle Vue, is there? just a thought, nothing important mind.

Nice job smiley - ok

I enjoyed reading this Cal - well done smiley - ok

Some nitpicks:

I think you should say in this sentence when this happened.

This remark will soon be out of date (I hope) - can you make it a more permanent sentence?

...its...

I'd say "9-1 scoreline" or "9-1 margin".

They did well in this league, finishing second.

"This sent them into the Midland League, where they won the championship "

Are these necessarily connected?

Which month?

Repetition. I'd say "... This league was suspended"

I'd make it clear that this is another league - how about "However another league, the Midland Combination, was set up"?

"...1948 - a staggering 37,099..."

...losses

in how many matches?

Not your fault, but this is thoroughly confusing. How about "Fourth Division (or equivalent) championship"

I'd qualify this as "beat Premiership sides Manchester City and Aston Villa"

A couple of items in the "Many Good Things..." section are out of chronological order with the following section - I'd consider mentioning them later.

lose

I'd give the date.

but unfortunately, ...

John Ryan - Saviour of Rovers

Could you re-word to remove the repetition?

New Year's Day

smiley - cheers Icy
