any mention of the 1st spanish colonies ?

It could also help if gave the aims of each colony. For instance the Viginia aims were more about stopping the catholics from getting all of America, the Maryland one as a catholic colony, the New England ones as espace from persecution etc etc.

I don't know much (or anything really) about Spanish colonies, which is why I made it about the North rather than Central or South America.

I didn't think the Virginan aims were stopping the Catholics smiley - erm as they were first and all, of the English at least. I'd have thought their aims were more commercial?

And I mentioned that Maryland was intended to be a Catholic refuge and the Puritans formed New England because they were dissenters in England

the spanish founded St. Augustine in Florida in the 16th century, well before the english arrived.

This is part of the reason that Jamestown is hidden up an inlet of a bay, so that the spanish wouldn't see them.

And this the spanish were there, and 'indians' were speaking spanish / being converted to catholism, te protestant english went to found Virginia

Really liked itsmiley - biggrin Well written and interesting.

But no mention of the Chinese? They discovered America in 1421 don't you know, put down some colonies in North and South America on the Pacific coast. I think there is some anthropological evidence for this... I also seem to remember something about chickens...

Anyway, I have been inspired to write an entry on William Johnson, one of the few Irishmen that we, the Irish, don't go on and on about as evidence to how we made America... I aim to rectify this.smiley - evilgrin

Besides, there's already a Guide Entry about that: A1029313

This one is about the colonies, not whoever happened to step foot on it first.

Great Entry smiley - smiley. It's well written and the subject is interesting too.smiley - ok

>>However, the English spread like Topsy<<
Could you mention when they started their spreading?

It would be good if you could link the text under the heading "House of Burgesses" to the heading in some way. Like '*This* first American government was' or 'The first American government, House of Burgesses, was'.

>>and the Virginia Company lost its charter<<
Could you add information on what this means exactly?

>>suppressed the uprising<<
Were the Natives at this point under English rule? If not, can you call it an uprising?

>>authorize attacks of Susquehannock<<
Is this a people, or a person?

>>To show the world how good godly people lived, the Puritans and Separatists built what they considered to be a 'city on a hill': a beacon for the whole world to look up to and strive for.<<
I didn't completely understand this sentence. Does this refer to an actual city? Which one?

>>a harsh treaty, however 600 English settlers and 3,000 Algonquians had been killed.<<
Maybe change it to
'a harsh treaty; at this point, however, 600 English settlers and 3,000 Algonquians had already been killed.?

Under the header 'Carolina', the second sentence is missing its end.

Under the header 'Pennsylvania':
>>Penn purchased the land given to him by the king<< > King

>>French Protestants (known as Huguenots) who faced prosecution<<
> persecution?

>>The French traded with Native Americans, and were allies,<<
>
The French traded, and were allies, with Native Americans,' (not sure about the commas, though smiley - erm)

The end is a little abrupt. Could you mention something about what was to happen next after this early period of colonialism?

You could maybe emphasise in the first paragraph of the Entry that the subject matter is not just the English colonies. I thought it was, and was a little surprised when I got to the part about the Dutch.

smiley - ok

Gnomon - time to move on

You say that Maryland was given to George Claver, but then a few sentences later you start talking about someone called Calvert. Are these the same person?
